November 12, 2012 – Ericsson, a world-leading provider of telecommunications equipment and services to mobile and fixed network operators, announced that it opened a Regional VoLTE Competence Center in South Korea on November 9.

LTE is the fastest growing system in the history of mobile communication and today, 455 million people have access to commercial LTE network. Originally designed as a data network, LTE has quickly evolved to support the delivery of voice services as well, named voice over LTE (VoLTE). Carriers are moving quickly towards LTE based all-IP access networks and are keen to bring their voice and messaging services to these networks.

The VoLTE market is set for growth over the next years. Now, leveraging technology leadership and thought leadership with proven track record in the market, Ericsson is addressing the market demand with the delivery of enhanced user experiences on LTE smartphones with HD voice, video calling and other rich, real-time communication services.

Mats H Olsson, Head of Region North East Asia, says: “North-East Asia is the leading market for VoLTE. By establishing the Competence Center in South Korea, we are leveraging the large talent pool in R&D organization in Ericsson-LG. Also, we will share the best practices across the region to reduce time-to-market and increase deployment efficiency for our customers.”

Advanced VoLTE technology innovation will lead to delivery of high quality services for operators’ subscribers’ demand. The VoLTE Competence Center will allow Ericsson to expand network-operations capabilities not only for the region, but also its global capabilities for developing future communications solutions.

By October 2012, all three South Korean operators had commercially launched VoLTE services, following the world’s first nationwide LTE network deployment in 2011. South Korea, having shown such market maturity for LTE, has become the ideal venue as a regional hub for VoLTE technology innovation. Also, South Korea has strong Ericsson R&D presence with around 800 researchers.
